Basketball Otago was established in 1996 following the dissolution of the Otago Mens Basketball Association, and the Otago Womens Basketball Association. The amalgamation of these two individual associations was the foundation of the now thriving basketball community that Otago has today.

Basketball Otago is an affiliated Association of Basketball New Zealand
Basketball Otago is an endorsed Association of Basketball New Zealand and an affiliated member of Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ). BBNZ recognises Basketball Otago as the principal delivery agent for basketball within their area and fully supports their activities and programmes. As an affiliated member, Basketball Otago may enter teams into all BBNZ regional and national tournaments, and their members can be selected to represent New Zealand as players, coaches and officials at national and international events and competitions.
